Figurine "Torgny" Viking Attacking with Axe
Torgny can be loosely translated into "Thor's loud weapon." And much like the ancient god's hammer, the axe was a common tool that could be readily employed on the battlefield. An easy weapon to construct, simply a stave of ash and an iron head - a sharpened curved blade on one side of the head, and a butt on the other. Torgny brandishes a large bearded axe, or hafted axe. Known for its size and power, the cutting surface was 8" to 12" supported by a 3' to 4' long haft. The large cutting surface and long handle allowed wielders to deliver devastating attacks. The Bayeux tapestry depicts an axe wielding huscarl cleaving off a horse's head with one mighty blow.
