Bookmark featuring a crowned imperial eagle surmounted by the letter N.
In gold-colored metal and red cord.

This eagle emblem dates back to the First Empire; the noun is feminine when it's a heraldic emblem, i.e. relating to coats of arms. The eagle was chosen by Napoleon as the emblem of the new regime on July 10, 1804. A symbol of power and majesty, it has also represented many empires. Indeed, in ancient Rome, the eagle was one of the attributes of the god Jupiter and the insignia of the legions, for example.
It was this majestic, stylized ancient eagle that Napoleon wished to refer to, rather than the heraldic eagle found on the arms of the Holy Roman Empire, the Russian Empire or the Kingdom of Prussia. Napoleon's choice was also made in memory of Charlemagne's eagle, which he wished to link to his new regime.
