The compass opened the world of exploration and discovery. Invented in China, there are several thousand years, it was first used by the priests feng shui, to indicate where and how to build. Today the compass still is a basic tool, a magnetic needle rotates on a vertical axis, pointing to magnetic north of the earth. The XVIth century navigators, until then limited to cabotage, could suddenly cross oceans. The sailors now used the compass heading, while continuing to use their traditional knowledge of navigation with the fixed stars, currents and prevailing winds to determine their position.
